Block Grease FAQ

Choose among Lithium, Lithium Complex, Soda and Soda with Moly, and confirm the right block format for your equipment.

Select a question to read the answer.

Which block grease should I choose for my equipment?

Start with the equipment manual and the exact lubrication point. Match the required thickener, consistency, service conditions and block-feed system. Lithium is used in specified mining and industrial applications; Lithium Complex in specified drilling, mining and heavy machinery applications; and Soda in specified steam railroad applications. These application families do not establish approval for every machine.

Use our Block Grease Application Guide to compare all four formulas. If you need help, send us the equipment make/model, lubrication point and required grease specification.

Is Lithium Complex an upgrade from Lithium, and when should I choose Soda with Moly?

Choose the formulation specified or approved for the equipment. Lithium Complex is not an automatic replacement for Lithium simply because it has a higher dropping point. Standard Soda and Soda with Moly are also distinct formulas.

Choose Soda with Moly when the lubrication point specifies or approves a soda-based block grease containing molybdenum disulfide. Its published specification lists at least 3% moly; a heavy load alone is not enough reason to substitute it.

Can I choose block grease by color, hardness or dropping point?

Use the product identity and published specification rather than color alone. If a new block looks or feels different, contact us with the product name, order information and photos before substituting a different formula.

Compare penetration values only with their stated test conditions: worked and unworked results are not a single hardness ranking. Dropping point is a laboratory test value, not the maximum operating temperature. Match the grease to the equipment requirements and actual service conditions.

Will block grease fit a conventional cartridge grease gun?

These products are hard blocks for lubrication systems designed to accept that format. Check the grease-feed arrangement and required block fit before ordering. For a 14 oz cartridge product, see Ultimate Grease and confirm that it meets your equipment specification.

How much block grease is in a single block or a carton?

The current options are one approximately 4 lb block or a carton of 12 blocks, approximately 46 lb total. Weights are approximate; a carton weight is not a guarantee that every individual block weighs exactly 4 lb.

Check the selected product and package option before ordering. If block dimensions are critical to your feed system, contact us to confirm fit for the formula you need. View Block Grease products.

What should I check before storing or changing block grease?

Follow the product’s Safety Data Sheet for storage and handling. Keep the formula identified and protect the grease from contamination.

Before changing grease, confirm compatibility and the equipment manufacturer’s changeover procedure. Follow its replenishment and inspection schedule. For help matching a specification, email sales@opti-lube.com or call/text 801-491-3717.
