Opti-Lube Soda Block Grease with Moly
Soda-based hard block grease with at least 3% molybdenum disulfide for equipment that specifies a moly-containing formula. Single approximately 4 lb block or 12-block carton (approximately 46 lb).
Soda with Moly Block Grease
Opti-Lube Soda Block Grease with Moly combines a soda-based hard block grease with molybdenum disulfide. It is intended for lubrication points that call for this formulation, including specified steam railroad applications. Select it when the equipment requires or approves moly rather than simply choosing the hardest block available.
Formulation: Soda with molybdenum disulfide
Appearance: Smooth texture; dark grey/black
Where this formula fits
For equipment that specifically calls for a soda-based block grease containing molybdenum disulfide. The published formula contains at least 3% moly and has a worked penetration range of 15–20, compared with 18–22 for standard Soda under the same stated test conditions.
Before choosing: Confirm that moly is specified or approved for the lubrication point. A heavier load alone is not enough reason to substitute this formula for standard Soda.
What makes it different
- Formula: Soda with molybdenum disulfide in a hard block format for systems designed to use solid grease.
- Consistency: Published cone penetration 15–20; worked, 60 strokes at 77°F (ASTM D217). This records the stated test condition rather than a general-purpose cartridge grease grade.
- Supply options: One approximately 4 lb block or a carton of 12 blocks, approximately 46 lb per carton.
- Moly content: At least 3% molybdenum disulfide in the published specification. Confirm that a moly-containing lubricant is approved for the component.
Choose your size
SINGLE BLOCK: One block, approximately 4 lb.
CASE OF 12 BLOCKS: One carton containing 12 blocks, approximately 46 lb total. Weights are approximate.
Published specifications
| Test / property | ASTM method | Typical result |
|---|---|---|
| Cone penetration at 77°F, worked 60 strokes | D217 | 15–20 |
| Molybdenum disulfide content | D128 | 3% minimum |
| Thickener content | D128 | 35%–45% |
| Dropping point | D566 | 360°F |
| Melting point | — | 350°F |
| Base oil viscosity at 100°C, cSt | D445 | 40–43 |
| Viscosity index | D2270 | 80 |
Reading the test values: Dropping point is not a maximum operating temperature. Worked and unworked penetration tests use different sample conditions; do not use them as a single hardness ranking across all formulas.
Before putting it into service
Confirm the grease specification for the exact lubrication point, the required block consistency and grease-feed fit. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s procedure for changing products, replenishing grease and inspecting the component.
