What Gel Melt does
- Gelled-fuel recovery: Designed to help reliquefy diesel fuel during a cold-weather emergency.
- Frozen-filter treatment: Published directions include a separate procedure for de-icing fuel filters.
- Water and icing control: Label directions also cover removing water and helping prevent fuel-filter icing.
Emergency use only. The bottle label specifies that Gel Melt is not for continuous use or routine prevention of fuel gelling. For preventive cold-weather treatment, use Opti-Lube Winter or XPD according to their labels.
Published tank-treatment table
The bottle directions for reliquefying gelled fuel specify approximately 3 oz per 10 gallons of diesel. The published treatment chart gives the following amounts:
| Diesel in tank | Gel Melt required |
| 10 gallons | 3 oz |
| 20 gallons | 6 oz |
| 40 gallons | 12 oz |
| 60 gallons | 18 oz |
| 80 gallons | 24 oz |
For biodiesel blends containing up to 20% biodiesel (B20), the published directions specify twice the listed additive amount. Higher dosing and additive used in filters reduce the amount of fuel that can be treated per container. Follow the current bottle label for your application.
Emergency application directions
Fuel is liquid, but the fuel filter is frozen
The label directs removal of the fuel filter and filling it with a mixture of 50% Gel Melt and 50% fresh diesel, followed by reinstalling the filter and starting the engine. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s filter-service and priming instructions; use this procedure only where filter prefilling is permitted.
Fuel in the tank has gelled
- Add approximately 3 oz of Gel Melt per 10 gallons of diesel in the tank, following the bottle label.
- Follow the label’s frozen-filter procedure using a 50/50 mixture of Gel Melt and fresh diesel, together with the equipment’s filter-service and priming instructions.
- After restarting, let the engine idle to warm the fuel system as directed by the label.
- Add Opti-Lube Winter or XPD at its labeled rate to help prevent further gelling.
Water removal and fuel-filter icing
Use the published tank-treatment amounts for this application. Follow the label’s doubled-dose instruction for biodiesel blends up to B20.
